Stimulate maternal lactation with semolina and sesame seeds

Stimulate maternal lactation with semolina and sesame seeds

I learned this advice from a lady in my in-laws, who had nursed each of six children for twenty-four months, and which I myself followed – to the letter – for my two boys.

These tips are related to the mother's diet to stimulate – naturally – her lactation.

After birth, the mother's breasts produce "Colostrum", a protein-rich liquid that gives the baby the antibodies needed to fight infections; around the 3rd day, the mother begins to have milk, the secretion of which the baby will invigorate himself by the "perseverance" of his sucking.

To stimulate maternal lactation:

Having plenty and enough milk consists in breastfeeding the baby at the request of the latter, especially in the very first days.

To "produce" milk, the mother must not follow a slimming diet, on the other hand, it is enough for her to have a healthy and balanced diet, and also to drink enough water ( and please, no soft drinks ).

Many foods are recommended to stimulate maternal lactation, such as lettuce, grilled sardines, white fish, and rice (in a salad, main course or sweet as a dessert)... But in my experience, the consumption of semolina as well that sesame seeds really was a "boost" for breastfeeding my children.

Semolina:

Semolina-based specialties are - really - present in North African gastronomy (Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia), and we find this product - received from wheat - in couscous, in traditional cakes (such as Makroute, Mbesses …), in pasta and in several recipes for customary and modern culinary preparations.

And personally, when I “ate” wheat semolina creations, my breasts produced “pretty” milk, to the point that I changed my clothes each time.

Sesame seeds:

Rich in calcium, dietary fiber and many health benefits, roasted and ground sesame seeds notably and remarkably promote maternal lactation.

So, mom can enjoy tasting sesame seed powder in cookies, or mixed with:

-         A glass of milk;

-         Honey: to obtain a paste;

-         Jam;

And in the Algerian tradition, for the woman who gives birth, we prepare "the tammina (tamine, tamena)" ( الطَّمِّينة), or taqnata ( التّـقْنَـتّـة): a dessert composed – essentially – of wheat semolina, honey and melted butter; and in this preparation, all kinds of appetizers - grilled and ground - can be incorporated, and particularly sesame seeds: the mother will then regain her strength, with all these beneficial ingredients, and she will have enough milk to breastfeed her baby.

Breastfeeding her baby is an incomparable gift from the mother for her child; the latter will be very close to his mother and he will grow up immune to several diseases and above all full of love and affinity.
